J-1 Visa Program

TRAVEL OUTSIDE THE UNITED STATES
travel
Trainees are permitted to travel outside of the United States during their training. You must first discuss your travel with your supervisors at your host company (as vacation is determined by the host company).

ACCORDING TO US GOVERNMENT REGULATIONS, YOU MAY NOT RE-ENTER THE US WITHOUT YOUR PASSPORT AND YOUR ORIGINAL DS-2019 FORM VALIDATED FOR TRAVEL BY PAN ATLANTIC. A COPY OF THIS FORM IS NOT ACCEPTABLE.

In regards to paperwork that must be taken care of for your re-entry into the US, once you have determined the date of your departure from the US and the date of return to the US, you will need to send Pan Atlantic:

  • Your Original DS-2019 form (if you have more than one DS-2019 form, an original and an updated form, you must send both to Pan Atlantic)
  • Your departure and return flight dates;
  • A check made out to Pan Atlantic in the amount of $25 which covers the cost of processing the paperwork and returning it to you. Please note that the fee for paperwork sent to us less than two weeks in advance of your departure date is $50 instead of $25, and paperwork that must be sent overseas will incur shipping fees in addition to the $50 validation fee.
  • A letter (or email) from your program supervisor at the host property confirming that you are in good standing in your program and that your time off has been approved;
  • A contact number and email address overseas where you can be reached in case of emergency while you are gone; and

Please send all paperwork to our office via courier. Paperwork will be returned to you care of the human resources department at your host property.

You must send your paperwork to us at least two weeks in advance of your travel date so that we have enough time to get everything processed and returned to you before your departure. There is a rush fee of $50 for any paperwork that is received less than two weeks before your US departure date. Additional fees will apply for any paperwork that must be sent to you overseas.

It is your responsibility to thoroughly investigate and comply with any and all entry requirements for the country to which you plan to travel. Validation of your DS-2019 form only relates to your reentry to the United States, and does not have any bearing on your entry into other countries. It is possible, depending on your country of citizenship (the country from which your passport was issued) that you may have to apply for a visa for entry to whatever country you are visiting, in addition to needing the US DS-2019 for re-entry to the United States. Pan Atlantic does not issue visas for countries outside the US so you are responsible for carefully researching all entry requirements for other countries.

Please make sure to double check the expiration date on your visa document in your passport. Your DS-2019 form shows how long you are legally allowed to stay in the US to train, and the visa document shows the dates during which you may apply at the US border for entry into the US. If your DS-2019 form is still valid but your visa document has expired you need to contact the US Embassy that issued the visa to find out how to apply for an extension BEFORE you attempt to reenter the US.

You may not leave and reenter the US on your J-1 visa during the 30 day grace period after your training program has ended. We do not validate travel within the last two weeks of training. Please also keep in mind that you may only leave the US for two weeks (14 days) at a time!

Please note: The US Government expects you to take full advantage of your J-1 visa. Please do not try to use your visa for frequent exit and reentry to the United States. You may be refused reentry if you have traveled abroad too often. Keep in mind that trainees may only leave the United States for two weeks at a time.
